Supplements are not necessary unless there is a deficiency. Certain minerals and trace minerals may be hard to get in your diet, though. Still, be careful - lots of people, including big names like Dr. Phil and Dr. Andrew Weil, and others in the fitness industry will try to sell you all kinds of supplements . The Jan/Feb issue of Nutrition Action published by the Center for Science in teh Puble Interest addressed the endorsement of supplements that were not backed by true evidence of their effectiveness. I’d seek the advice of a good physician who is knowledgeable about fitness and nutrition.
