A recent study from Sydney reveals that a low protein diet meant that individuals gain weight in the long term due to a high calorie consumption.
How does protein help with weight loss? The Australian study proved, from the samples’ calorie consumption patterns, that the group consuming 15-35% protein everyday was eating fewer calories than the group that ate a low 10% of daily protein. This could be due to two reasons – 1. Healthy (low-fat) protein is a better appetite controller than most junk carbs and fats, and 2. The other snacks weren’t good dietary choices (Read: High Glycemic index, low energy for high calorie worth, and high on salt and sugars). Between these two causes themselves, a person can benefit through adequate protein consumption when it comes to weight management.

DITCH THE DATED BODY PART SPLIT AND FOCUS ON MOVEMENTS, NOT MUSCLES
Movements such as squats, presses and rows evoke a far greater hormonal response than do isolation exercises, which are often performed on machines. More hormonal response equals more muscle. Challenging compound movements trigger higher production of testosterone and growth hormone than do machine based exercises. Free weight movements and body weight exercises also require more stability, which engages the core and smaller stabilizer muscles during their execution.
Body part splits, popularized by bodybuilding magazines of yesterday, primarily focus on muscle groups, requiring the trainee to hit the gym five days or more per week, which for most busy professionals isn’t feasible. Also body part splits usually lock the trainee into machines for a bulk of the workout, as to really focus on singular muscle groups, thus removing the stability component, which is critical to activities of everyday life and preventing injury.

Exercise can be categorized into three types: cardiovascular, strength and flexibility. People normally perform each type of exercise specific to their needs (e.g. losing weight or body building) without realizing that performing all three types of exercise has long-term benefits far more superior than when performing only one or two types.
Today’s busy life puts us in a position where we seek immediate results. If our goal is to lose weight, we do cardio. If our goal is to gain weight and build muscles, we do strength training. Most people ignore flexibility because it is not directly related to immediate weight loss and the results are not obvious.
What people forget are the overall long-term benefits of all three types of exercise and how they need to be combined to complement each other.
