LaFayette bodybuilder, with cerebral palsy, competes in championships

Despite his physical defects caused by cerebral palsy, Brian Reed has been competing in natural bodybuildingshows for more than 20 years. This further proves that neither age nor physical challenges can hinder achievements in bodybuilding.

Brian Reed, of Lafayette, placed third in the Heavyweight (170 pounds and up) weight class at the New York State Natural Bodybuilding Championships Nov. 19 at the Driver’s Village Conference Center in Cicero.

Reed, who is a recreation therapist at Tully Hill Chemical Dependency Treatment Center, also placed third in the men’s (over 40) Masters class.

Losing weight after 50: It can be done

At age 50 and up, losing weight and maintaining it can be quite a challenge. But it can be done. Read on for details.

Roman poet and satirist Horace once said a good scare is worth more than good advice, and Dr. Dawn White would agree when it comes to weight gain.

“Everyone knows they should be eating healthy foods and exercising, but for many, until they are diagnosed with a health scare, they just won’t,” said White, an internist and certified bariatrician at Grand Health Partners. “A diagnosis of diabetes and daily insulin shots prompts people to seriously take a look at their weight and what they can do to get back in shape and reduce their risk.”

Bodybuilding 101: Avoiding Squat Injuries

Here is a list of the most common squatting mistakes bodybuilders and weightlifters make. Avoid these mistakes to avoid injury.

As far as lower body exercises are concerned, the barbell squat is king. Unfortunately, this weightlifting exercise also has a bad rap for causing knee injuries, when in fact the opposite is true—squats are actually good for your knees, provided you use proper form.

If you plan to make squatting a part of your weightlifting or bodybuilding routine, it is vitally important to stick to proper form. Not performing a squat correctly is a great way to injure yourself, especially if you decided to squat heavy right away. Remember, proper form trumps a heavier squatting weight. You can’t continue to exercise if your knee is injured.

Bodybuilding 101: The Benefits of Deer Meat

Amateur bodybuilder Ann Olson writes about the benefits of eating deer meat, especially in relation to bodybuilding.

Deer meat isn’t a popular protein source for bodybuilders for many reasons. If you’re not willing to shoot a buck yourself, deer meat does not come cheap, which may explain why most bodybuilders reach for chicken breasts instead of organic venison. If you do kill a buck, gutting and skinning the deer can be messy and time consuming—it’s not for the weak of heart.

So why consider it?

Sure, sure, it’s messy—but don’t make that the reason not to chow down on quality deer. Deer meat has a slew of benefits you won’t find in your traditional slab of chicken or beef.
